A KEYNOTE ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE PRESIDENT, STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, OFFA , COMRADE. ABIOLA AZEEZ, AT THE 2019/2020 MATRICULATION CEREMONY,  HELD ON FRIDAY 20TH  DECEMBER, 2019

 PROTOCOL

It is with great delight I welcome you all to the 26th matriculation ceremony for the 2019/2020 academic session.
On behalf of the entire Polytechnic community, I want to welcome our Rector, Dr Abdullateef Ademola Olatunji, Deputy Rector's, Registrar of the Polytechnic, Bursar, Librarian, the Powerful DSA, Dean of Schools, HOD's, Distinguished Personalities, guests, parents, guardians, friends and well-wishers who are here to share the joy of this moment with the matriculating students.

First and foremost, I congratulate all matriculating students on this occasion; more so that gaining admission into the Polytechnic is not an easy achievement.

Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, permit me to briefly dwell on the significance of this ceremony.

Matriculation is indeed an important ceremony in the life of every tertiary institution, all over the world.  It is a day set aside to consummate the process of admitting students into tertiary institution.  On this occasion, fresh students are made to take oath of allegiance to constituted authority and to commit themselves to peaceful living as members of the Polytechnic community.  In other words, matriculation confers on the participating candidates, full membership of the institution having fulfilled all necessary requirements.  Flowing from this, every matriculated student is entitled to all rights and privileges recognised by the Polytechnic authority.  Such rights include, but not limited to: inclusion of the students in the Polytechnic register, obtaining the Polytechnic identity card, living in the students’ hostel, right to access information in the library, representing the Polytechnic at different forums, participation in students’ union activities and enjoyment of all other available teaching and learning facilities in the Polytechnic.

On the other hand, as full members of the Polytechnic community, it is part of your obligations to maintain law and order, pay your school fees and other levies, protect the Polytechnic properties, respect the rights of your fellow students, report any criminal activities to the Polytechnic authority, keep your hostel and lecture rooms clean, among others.  In light of the above, it is my hope that you will allow all these obligations guide your conduct throughout your stay in the school.

Let me also seize this opportunity to enjoin you to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, sexual misbehaviour, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, thuggery, fraudulent acts and other nefarious activities which can mar your bright future.

Today, Nigeria and the world at large are infested with so many social vices; and it is also worrisome today that our youths have lost the virtues of hard work, honesty, punctuality and sense of morality in general.  It is an irony that all these are happening in a country that has been described as the most religious country in the world.

This being the case, the conclusion one can draw is that most of the agencies of socialization have failed in their duty of moulding the character of the young ones.

Therefore during your stay here, your lecturers and support staff will, through their exemplary life styles and moral suasion or preachment, take you through rigorous but rewarding moral training.

I would like to admonish all matriculating students, to avoid all forms of violent, fighting on campus. Violence needless to say is pernicious.  It brings nothing but destruction or annihilation. And as a Polytechnic, our stand on violent fighting is unequivocal outright dismissal from the Polytechnic.  Rather than resorting to violence, there are different loci of authorities you can explore to resolve any disagreement or dispute amicably, our door are open to you at all times.

Finally, I wish to re-emphasise the need for you all to take your studies very seriously.

I therefore look forward to the successful completion of your different programmes within the record time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank you all for coming.
I also once again congratulate all the matriculating students and wish them success in the years ahead.

 Thank you.
I am AZEEZ ABIOLA ADIGUN. (GCFRA).
